HERE IT IS! The debut video from the Video Music Series.
My music director Alex Leonard and I have set out to release new video music every 1st and 14th of the month.
Shall We Dance
is composed by George
Gershwin with Lyrics by Ira Gershwin. It comes from the 1937 film score of
the same title. The stars of the film
were the dancing duo Fred
Astaire and Ginger
Rogers. The score of Shall We Dance is probably the largest source of
Gershwin orchestral works unavailable to the general public, at least since the
advent of modern stereo recording techniques in the 1950s. I was first
introduced to this song while performing in a dinner theatre production called
“Rhapsody in Blue” which was a revue featuring all Gershwin compositions. The
Music Director for that show was John Austin Butsch. During and after the
production of “Rhapsody in Blue” John and I became near and dear friends and we
went on to collaborate on several other productions and recordings. The John
Austin Butsch arrangement of Shall We Dance is the foundation of the remixes
featured on the EP which is now available for listening on SOUNDCLOUD.
Arranger and Mixer Andre
Wening took the vocals from the original arrangements and built the remix
versions around those vocals from the Butsch recording. Maestro Alex Leonard brought the song back to
its original and intended arrangement by Gershwin. That acoustic version can be
heard on the EP as well as seen and heard here on > You Tube.
