Christian Dior and The New Look

Christian Dior was my first influence into the world of fashion design. Dior brought a sensibility to fashion design. His design method was comparable to that of which an architect would build a structure. Every detail from shape to construction was taken into consideration to form a perfect silhouette. Researching Dior design demonstrates a pure and meticulous blue print to proper design expertise. In 1947 Dior launched a campaign called The New Look. The New Look was actually not so new after all. The design premise was based on fashion silhouettes from the past but was modernized and brought into the current fashion world that would pull fashion out of it's lack of true design concepts. With WW2 behind us the time had arrived to return to a civilization that would empower the people to luxuriate with dignity and style. Dior gave women a new option allowing them to feel and look feminine again. However this return to femininity that he now offered was classic, timeless and tasteful. The New Look was based on design from an era prior to the 1900's. In the 1900's fashion design was frumpy and just hung on the female model. By the 1920's and 1930's women were placed in a fashion environment and trend that made them look more like men in drag as opposed to glorifying and appreciating the feminine shape. The 1940's fashion trend again emphasized a more masculine look with boxy shoulders, clunky shoes and drab color palettes. The New Look offered women dressing options that would once again embrace the female shape. Dior is still recognized as a Major Fashion Brand. I use the word brand because he and his colleagues grasped the concepts of branding long before anyone else in the field of fashion design. The Dior brand remains synonymous with Class, Perfection, Taste and Style.

Maureen Footer and Marie-France Pochna held a lecture detailing this period of time that turned the fashion world around. Both experts in the fields of Style, Design and relevant history. Together they revealed the backdrop story of how The New Look came into fruition and reset the fashion design industry. Footer has authored and published books detailing a clear insight into the world of Christian Dior and is probably one of the most noted historians on the subjects of Fashion Design and Architecture inspired and realized through the talents and genius known as Christian Dior.
