"the verse" hasn't always meant what most popular
artists now understand it to mean.
"Verse" used to be the name for a
32 bar introduction, before getting to the main piece of music. A verse has a
different usage for music than in literature. In a song, a verse refers to a
complete stanza. It is the part of the song that sets up the story. It is the use
of descriptive words to convey information as an introduction. At the top of a
song the verse gives listeners more insight leading to the main message of the
song while within the song the additional verse moves the story forward. “Verse
Introductions” are rarely written anymore but composers of its days like
Porter, Harburg, Hart, Gershwin and Coward would almost always include this
intro type verse in their compositions.
